WARNING! Can apply 12V directly to USB power pins and damage your device!
By Alan J.
I am an electrical design engineer with over 30 years experience. Though the product is designed with an integrated circuit suitable for the task, it has a serious design flaw - the power input contact is less than an eighth inch from the bare copper windings of the step down inductor. If the device is pushed in firmly, the two will make contact. When that happens, rather than the 5 Volts USB devices are designed for, the power pin will be the same as that of the power port - nominally 12 Volts. This happened to my son, and the resulting overvoltage fried his iPod.

If you have or get one, the fix is straightforward: 1) remove the two small screws from the USB end cover (one is under the label), 2) unscrew the power tip, and 3) carefully separate the two plastic halves. Place a small piece of plastic (cut, for instance, from a gallon milk jug or something similar) between the metal power input tab and the inductor (the little gadget that looks like a small spool of copper wire). Applying hot melt glue between the two (or in addition to the insulating plastic) would also work well. Put it all back together, and your charger should function as designed.

Perhaps the folks building and selling the device will become aware of the problem and address it by adding an insulator, or covering the winding of the inductor. Until then, unless you want to fix it yourself, buyer beware.

Works Great
By TomK
I tested this with a phone doing GPS navigation, something that really ran the battery down with another 12V adapter/charger attached Using this adapter, the phone charged, albeit slowly, with navigation on.

The picture showed a 700 mA output, but the unit I received was rated at 1.0 A (1000mA). I purchased an extra microUSB cable so that I could insert an ammeter and test the current. It output 490 mA, the same as the AC charger that came with the phone, and very close to the USB standard. The adapter used 5.6 mA from the 12V source with no load.

Best value and most convenient
By Michael C. Wayman
I think that this charger is the best car charger for an iphone/ipod that money can buy. It is super compact, easy to use and doesn't need a long cord to be stored along with it. All you need is the usb cable that comes along with your device.
